Compare Kurt’s most popular vises to find the right fit for precision, workpiece access, mounting flexibility and faster changeovers.
When CNC machining demands tight tolerances, workholding reliability matters. Jaw lift, deflection and inconsistent clamping can introduce variation that affects dimensional accuracy, surface finish and part-to-part repeatability.
So, which CNC milling vises are most reliable for tight tolerances? The answer depends on the workpiece, machining process and production priorities. A dependable general-purpose vise may be the right choice for one shop, while another needs more clearance beneath the part, flexible mounting options or faster changeovers between jobs.

Kurt Workholding offers four distinct solutions for these needs: the DX CrossOver series, an established standard for CNC milling; the HD690 series, designed around workpiece access and efficient multi-vise setups; VersatileLock series, Kurt’s premium precision vise line; and the TriLock with CarveSmartâ„¢ series, with an integrated quick-change system that adapts to three different workholding configurations and allows jaw changes in seconds.
Kurt’s commitment to precision-engineered workholding and reliable performance is part of the DNA of each of each vise series. The differences lie in how each design helps manufacturers solve specific production challenges. All Kurt vises are also covered by our Lifetime Ironclad Warranty.
What Makes a CNC Milling Vise Reliable for Tight Tolerances?
A precision CNC milling vise must do more than generate clamping force. It needs to secure the workpiece while minimizing movement and supporting consistent positioning between setups.
Three factors are particularly important:
- Jaw lift and deflection: Movement during clamping can affect workpiece position and dimensional consistency.
- Clamping repeatability: Consistent clamping behavior helps reduce variation between machining cycles.
- Construction and setup flexibility: A stable vise body, durable components, accurate mounting and appropriate jaw configurations support reliable performance across different applications.
Kurt’s patented AngLock® design uses a pull-type clamping action to help minimize jaw lift and stationary-jaw deflection. Other features across the product lineup address mounting flexibility, workpiece access, chip management and efficient production changeovers.
The best vise is not necessarily the one with the longest feature list. It is the one whose particular combination of features best supports the machining process.

DX CrossOver Series: The Industry Standard for CNC Workholding
The Kurt DX CrossOver series is a dependable starting point for manufacturers seeking versatile, production-ready workholding. Our most popular vise, the DX6, in particular, is an established standard in 6-inch CNC milling vises.
Available in 4-, 6- and 8-inch jaw widths, the DX series combines Kurt’s AngLock design with a one-piece body, cast-on stationary jaw, hardened vise bed and hardened jaw plates. The DX design also incorporates through-body chip evacuation and precision mounting using locating sine keys.
The DX6 offers a 6-inch jaw width and a 9-inch jaw opening. Its cast-on stationary jaw improves stability during clamping, with 30% less horizontal deflection compared with previous designs.
The DX4 offers a 6.5-inch opening, while the DX8 provides an 8-inch jaw width for larger workpieces. Depending on the model, the series offers manual, reverse, pneumatic or hydraulic configurations.
These characteristics make DX vises a versatile option for shops running a broad mix of machining jobs. It provides a dependable workholding foundation without requiring customers to pay for specialized features they may not need.
DX vises can also be upgraded with compatible CarveSmart Master Jaw kits, adding quick-change dovetail jaw capability to an existing vise. For manufacturers looking to improve changeover efficiency without replacing their workholding equipment, that provides a useful upgrade path.
The DX Series Advantage: Affordable quality, field proven and versatile with a wide range of sizes and actuation styles for everyday CNC production.
HD690 Series: The High-Clearance Specialist

The Kurt HD690 series includes the HD691 (reverse option), HD690CS (features CarveSmart Jaws) and HD690CST (features CarveSmart Jaws with Talon Tops). This line of vises addresses a different challenge: making more effective use of the available machining envelope while improving workpiece access and multi-vise setup options.
Unlike the DX and VersatileLock families, the HD690 series is a focused 6-inch vise platform. Its narrower body allows more vises to fit within the same work envelope, while its taller body is designed to reduce deflection under clamping loads.
The series features a 9-inch jaw opening, a wide, bolt-on stationary jaw secured from the top with four bolts, and a matched body-height specification of ±0.0005″.
That matched-height specification is especially useful when arranging multiple vises side by side or supporting a larger component across several stations. Consistent body height simplifies fixture planning and helps establish a consistent workholding surface.
The bolt-on stationary jaw also offers a different maintenance and assembly arrangement from the cast-on stationary jaw used in the DX family. Its four-bolt mounting is designed to reduce stress in the body, helping the vise remain flatter after assembly.
Depending on configuration, HD690/HD691 models are available in manual, reverse, metric and hydraulic versions. The HD690CS and HD690CST add integrated CarveSmart quick-change jaws, including a Talon Top option on the CST.
The HD690/HD691 Series Advantage: More workpiece access, efficient multi-vise setups, native CarveSmart jaw options.
VersatileLock Series: The Premium Precision Platform

For manufacturers prioritizing specified clamping repeatability alongside unusual mounting flexibility, the Kurt VersatileLock series offers a compelling premium workholding solution.
Available in 4-, 6- and 8-inch jaw widths, VersatileLock vises combine Kurt’s patented AngLock design with a one-piece body and a cast-on stationary jaw. Pull-type clamping action reduces stationary-jaw deflection by at least 80%.
Kurt VersatileLock Series vises have a 0.0005-inch clamping repeatability, making them perfect for applications where consistent clamping behavior is an important part of the workholding evaluation.
The VersatileLock mounting design is another major differentiator. VersatileLock vises are machined on the top and both sides, allowing the vise to be mounted on its base or on either side. This flexibility can open up fixture configurations that are more difficult with a conventional base-mounted vise with a drip edge.
For example, a shop designing custom workholding for a horizontal machining center may need a vise mounted in a particular orientation to maximize clearance or accommodate a dense fixture arrangement. VersatileLock’s ground mounting surfaces give the engineer additional configuration options.
The vise series also includes standard, reverse and short-body configurations, with pneumatic and hydraulic options available on applicable models.
VersatileLock is Kurt’s premium-priced conventional single-station vise family. You can rely on the VersatileLock’s combination of clamping repeatability, reduced stationary-jaw deflection and mounting flexibility on the most high-precision setups.
As with any workholding specification, 0.0005-inch clamping repeatability is not a guarantee of finished-part accuracy. Machine condition, tool wear, thermal stability, workpiece material and setup technique can also influence the final result.
The VersatileLock Series advantage: Premium precision features and mounting flexibility for demanding workholding applications.
TriLock with CarveSmart Series: The 3-in-1 Quick-Change System

The TriLock Series is our newest and most exciting product lineup. The series is different from Kurt’s conventional single-station vise families in several ways. Rather than being defined primarily by jaw width or mounting orientation, it is built around a quick-change system that allows a single vise to quickly convert to three distinct workholding configurations. TriLock vises are supplied as double-station vises but can be reconfigured into two additional setups in minutes:
- Double-station configuration: Hold two or more smaller parts simultaneously.
- Small single-station configuration: Hold one part in a compact setup.
- Large single-station configuration: Accommodate a wider workpiece.
Part capacity and reconfiguration are the name of the game with the TriLock lineup. For instance, the 6-inch TL6CS vise allows opens to 4-inches wide in each station in double-station mode, or up to 11 inches wide in large single-station mode.
The integrated CarveSmart dovetail jaw system is central to the TriLock’s design. It eliminates conventional jaw-attachment cap screws and allows jaw changes in approximately 10 seconds. The system offers tight-tolerance jaw changeover accuracy. When setting up a new job on a machine equipped with a TriLock vise, you simply remove the jaw plates for the current job and replace them with the CarveSmart jaw plates for the next job. SMARTstopâ„¢ jaw tech found on CarveSmart jaws is an accurate, internal, vertical slot and pin system. SMARTstop jaws relocate ±0.0005″ in the same vise.
The 3-in-1 design makes TriLock particularly useful for shops running multiple part families or recurring jobs with different workholding requirements. Instead of dedicating a separate vise to each configuration, operators can use soft jaws and change setups for different jobs in minutes without compromising setup accuracy. Click to learn more about machining soft jaws.
The lineup includes 4- and 6-inch models, standard and short-body versions, and a 6-inch hydraulic model. A standard 8-inch TriLock model is coming soon along with additional hydraulic models. As an added bonus TriLock vises can also be disassembled for cleaning or reconfiguration in under three minutes: Check out this video.
Unlike a conventional vise that can be upgraded with quick-change master jaws, the TriLock with CarveSmart series incorporates CarveSmart jaws natively by machining the dovetails directly in the movable and stationary jaws. This improves jaw changeover accuracy between jobs to within .005″, making TriLock vises a natural choice when setup accuracy, quick changes and multiple configurations are fundamental to the production process.
The TriLock Series Advantage: Faster reconfiguration, repeatable jaw location and three workholding configurations in one system with lightning fast tear down and cleaning.
Maximize HMC Productivity with TriLock Cluster Towers

For shops operating horizontal machining centers (HMCs), selecting the right vise is only part of an effective workholding strategy. The way vises are arranged can be just as important as the vise itself.
Kurt offers dedicated 4-inch and 6-inch TriLock with CarveSmart Cluster Towers and a six-sided TriLock Tower that combine the TriLock system’s flexible workholding arrangements with multi-sided fixturing.
These towers allow manufacturers to accommodate multiple parts and machining operations within a single fixture. Individual TriLock stations can be configured to suit different part sizes, while CarveSmart jaws help make jaw changes more efficient with all the same tolerances and features as the TriLock Lineup listed above.
For high-mix production, the ability to reconfigure stations while retaining a consistent workholding platform can reduce setup effort and improve machine utilization. For higher-volume work, the same approach can help increase the number of parts held in a machining cycle.
Cluster Towers are a distinct system-level application for TriLock. The benefit comes from combining the vise’s 3-in-1 design and quick-change jaws with a fixture engineered around the machine, pallet and part geometry.
Best fit: HMCs, palletized production, pallet pools, high-density setups and manufacturers that want flexible multi-station workholding.
Back-to-Back Vise Mounting: A Lower-Cost Alternative to a Cluster Tower

A dedicated Cluster Tower is not the only way to improve workholding density. Kurt can configure many single- and double-station vise models for back-to-back mounting on a common base.
Compatible product lines include DX CrossOver, VersatileLock, TriLock, XL, HD690 and HDL vises. By mounting two vises in opposing orientations, manufacturers can hold more parts within the available machine envelope without necessarily investing in a full Cluster Tower or tombstone.
This approach can be especially useful for horizontal machining centers and palletized systems where multiple parts can be machined in one cycle. Depending on the application, back-to-back mounting can provide a lower-cost way to increase workholding density while retaining the ability to choose a vise suited to the part and machining requirements.
VersatileLock’s side-mounting capability can be particularly useful when fixture orientation is a key design consideration. Other vise families can also be configured for back-to-back mounting through Kurt’s Custom Engineered Workholding team, subject to the requirements of the specific application.
The team can help determine the appropriate vise pairing, base size, mounting arrangement and jaw configuration for a given machine and workpiece.
